Skiing and marathon-running? North Korea’s new experiences are perfect for thrill-seekers

When it comes to North Korea, most people only think of the Kim regime as their first impression. But in 2016, some Taiwanese travel agencies planned a series of unique tours to North Korea. In addition to city sightseeing, these tours also included special activities such as cycling, skiing, marathons, and golf, offering people a different perspective on the country.

He Kui-ying, chairman of the Star Alliance Travel Agency, said that due to North Korea’s unique political environment and its air of mystery, it has attracted many young travelers in recent years. Although the country’s civilian economy is relatively underdeveloped, it has invested heavily in developing sports facilities. As a result, its ski resorts and golf courses meet world-class standards. Moreover, participants in sports events in North Korea can receive a “North Korea Completion Certificate,” which is definitely a rare and alternative souvenir.

Masikryong Ski Resort is North Korea’s most modern ski resort, featuring one beginner slope, four intermediate slopes, and five advanced slopes suitable for both alpine and snowboarding. It’s considered a challenging resort and is highly valued by leader Kim Jong-un. Ski instructor Liang HanX pointed out that Masikryong Ski Resort is located at a higher latitude than Japan’s famous Naeba Ski Resort. The snow is dry and fluffy, and temperatures have already dropped to minus 10 degrees Celsius since winter began, ensuring ample snowfall—unlike Japan, which is currently suffering from a warm winter with little snow, making it a special new experience for skiing enthusiasts. During the inaugural Taiwan tour group on January 15, several skilled skiers were already eager to give it a try.

He Kui-ying said that in addition to winter sports like skiing, North Korea tour groups can also participate in running and cycling experiences. There are also international summer camp activities during the summer. The New Taipei City Sports Association has selected 20 top domestic marathon runners who will travel to North Korea in 2016 to compete in the Pyongyang International Marathon on April 10. Running enthusiasts who want to “run around the world” or those who want to cheer on athletes can also sign up together for this international event and enjoy the thrill of running on North Korean soil.
