Detox by "Living Burial": Limited-Natural Sand Bath in Ibusuki, Japan

You’ve probably played "burying someone alive" at the beach, but have you ever thought about sand as a form of therapy? Located at the southern tip ofKagoshima’s Ibusuki is famous forits “sand bath,”and currently there are two operatorsoffering treatments using naturally geothermally heated sand that encourages sweating, thereby helping to detoxify and relieve symptoms like frozen shoulder, neuralgia, and menopausal discomfort.

Thanks to the submarine hot spring geothermal activity around Ibusuki, the sand onshore can be directly heated. After changing into a yukata, you simply lie down on the sand, which is heated to around 50°C, though the perceived temperature is only about 30–40°C—so there’s no need to worry about it being too hot. Staff will cover your entire body with sand, and after about 10–15 minutes, you’ll start sweating. Each session lasts approximately 20 minutes. Close your eyes and quietly enjoy the sensation of sweat dripping down and the soothing sound of the waves. Afterward, you’ll feel significantly more relaxed both physically and mentally.

After enjoying the gifts of nature, sand bath operators also offer hot springs so visitors can rinse off the sand and enjoy a double treat of bathing. The operators also note that most visitors currently come from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Shanghai.They recommend visiting in spring or autumn when it’s cooler,，as summer can get unbearably hot, potentially ruining your experience. Also, business hours vary by season—the facility is generally open year-round, but may temporarily close due to bad weather.
