The Most Sacred Site of the Ryukyu Kingdom“Sefa-utaki”features a natural landscape that creates an inviolably sacred atmosphere. During the 15th to 16th centuries under King Shō Shin of the Ryukyu Kingdom, it was once a male-only area restricted to women, to the extent that even the king had to dress as a woman to enter. It is a key experiential destination that visitors to Okinawa must not miss.

In November 2000, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are no man-made structures such as reinforced concrete or bricks within “Sefa-utaki”—everything in sight consists of natural trees and massive rocks. The site includes a stone-paved approach path that leads to the worship area used by the priestesses in the past. It is entirely different from typical Japanese shrine worship experiences. Entering here feels like stepping into a forest. According to guides, simply embracing the sacred aura and following the path will naturally allow you to sense its spiritual power.

Upon entering from the “Ukeeguchi” (entrance gate) of Sefa-utaki, the first massive rock you encounter is the worship site called “Ukiri.” Further inside is the area symbolizing the deity that guards the kitchen. Walking along the stone-paved approach, you will arrive at the famous triangular space known as “Sankuru,” where you can see dripping stalactites and water-collecting earthenware pots—the dripping water is considered holy water.

The triangular space is the most sacred worship area here. Two large boulders naturally form a triangle. Passing through this triangular zone, the view suddenly opens up to reveal Kudaka Island in the sea to the east. Against the deep blue waters, a long, narrow island comes into view, almost like a painting—breathtakingly beautiful and further enhancing the sacred ambiance of the surroundings.

Guides explain that although Sefa-utaki is a natural area, every plant, tree, and even stone here belongs to the sacred site and must not be taken. Visitors are also asked to speak quietly and show respect if they need to converse within the sacred grounds.
