Travel Center / Comprehensive Report
In France, to welcome the new year, every household enjoys a flaky pastry called the “King’s Cake,” which consists of two round layers of puff pastry with an almond cream filling baked in between. Julien Perrinet, the French executive pastry chef at Taipei Grand Hyatt, is specially offering this traditional French-inspired dessert from now until January 15.
The outwardly simple King’s Cake holds its biggest surprise: a small porcelain figurine, about the size of a knuckle, hidden inside the cake. In France, when eating the King’s Cake, the youngest person at the table hides under the table, and the host or the oldest person cuts the cake. One slice is assigned by the person under the table to a member of the group. Whoever finds the little porcelain figurine in their slice is the lucky “king.” The lucky king not only symbolizes good fortune for the coming year but can also choose a “queen” and ask them to complete a task. Baguette Gift 'Bakery will offer the King’s Cake in two sizes (4-inch for NT$108 and 7-inch for NT$520).
Additionally, the King’s Cake is also available at three branches of le bouquet, the European-style classic bakery under Evergreen Laurel Hotel — located in Shilin, Leye, and Tienmu.
