"Themed restaurants" have mushroomed across Taiwan in recent years, and it seems Hong Kong is catching the same wave. Moomin Café

Many people think Moomin is a hippo, but actually it’s a “spirit”! The “Moomin Café,” beloved by children and female customers in Japan, opened its first overseas branch in Hong Kong’s LCX Mall. Just a year after its launch, it has already garnered a loyal fan following. The restaurant’s interior is inspired by the original stories, using wood as the main design element to create a world dedicated to Moomin. At the entrance, you’re warmly welcomed by Moomin’s parents, and inside, you’ll enjoy “tableside service” from Moomin family plush toys—letting you savor your meal while getting up close and personal with Moomin.. The ambiance creates a relaxed and warm atmosphere while also bringing the pure and heartwarming world from the stories to Hong Kong, making diners feel like they’ve stepped into the tale themselves.

Originating from Finland, Moomin seamlessly blends into a variety of cuisines. Among them, the “Moomin House Pancake” is not only a favorite of Moomin but also a limited menu item exclusive to the Hong Kong store. Stacked into a tower and drizzled with the café’s homemade cream, the fluffy pancakes are topped with various fruits such as strawberries and blueberries, offering a rich, layered taste that’s both sweet and tangy. And beneath the pancake tower lies another surprise: a three-tiered dessert hidden inside, featuring egg pudding, chocolate mousse, and mango jelly—a novelty that’s fun and has become a must-order dish at every table. Additionally, customers can choose their favorite character before ordering and take home the plush toy placed on their pancake after the meal.

▲ Super cute Hello Kitty macarons that even movie star Shu Qi can't bear to eat.

Hello Kitty le petit café

"Do you know where the macarons are that even a movie star like Shu Qi can’t bring herself to eat?" They’re in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong. This Hello Kitty cake and dessert specialty shop, Hello Kitty le petit café, originally opened in the SOGO department store in Causeway Bay back in late 2013, and only moved to Tsim Sha Tsui in July this year. Ditching the usual cutesy pink girlie decor, it’s now themed around “romantic Paris,” with a simple, elegant all-white look both inside and out. As for the star, Hello Kitty, she’s gone glam and elegant, donning a brown dress and a hat like a proper lady of high society. Sit in the café, enjoy a macaron and a coffee, and spend a peaceful afternoon tea moment with Kitty.

The café offers 21 different flavors of macarons, with the team constantly innovating to develop new tastes like pistachio, cherry blossom, brown sugar, and cashew. But what’s truly impressive is that each colorful macaron is imprinted with a unique Kitty pattern.. During holidays, the shop also selects popular flavors to create special limited-edition macarons, using expert techniques to add fresh twists to the classic treat—so much so that Kitty fans find it hard to take a bite. Selling up to a thousand macarons a day, they make great gifts and have become a new favorite among Hong Kong women. Aside from macarons, there are also cakes, cookies, pancakes, and drinks. Among them, the cookies come in 12 different flavors, each featuring a large Kitty face integrated right in—so many choices let you match your mood every day.

▲ Seasonal Gudetama-themed restaurant.

Izumi Curry

Created through a collaboration between Osaka’s Izumi Curry and SANRIO, Asia’s first “Gudetama Themed Restaurant” launched in Hong Kong’s Kwun Tong in October this year. The seasonal Kwai Fong branch will only be open until February next year—Gudetama fans better hurry. Known for its healing charm, Gudetama is practically the “spirit” of the egg world. From wallpaper and furnishings to tables, chairs, decorations, and even coasters, its presence is everywhere. While waiting for your food, every corner is a perfect photo spot. Moreover, since SANRIO pays close attention to character aesthetics, Gudetama is incorporated into the dishes while staying true to its original “look”—such as in tamagoyaki, curry rice, udon noodles, and seafood pancakes. There it is, lazily lying in the bowl, its ultra-healing expression making it almost too cute to eat.

▲ Every dish features Gudetama lying inside.

“Every dish has it” is arguably the biggest highlight of this restaurant. With an astonishing daily consumption of 3,000 eggs, you can see just how popular Gudetama really is.Whether it’s the wobbly expression of the egg yolk as the water-boiled egg moves, or the Gudetama omelet holding a “sigh~” sign, melting into the cheese and looking helplessly served on your plate—it makes you hesitate where to start and adds a fun vibe to your meal.. Gudetama, which has become a hot topic across Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, isn’t just selling tons of merchandise—it’s also making waves in the food industry. This super-talkative Gudetama is truly an attention-grabber and money-maker.
