Hipsters exploring ancient capitals have a new destination—the world’s most beautiful “Tsutaya Books” opens in Kyoto

Ranked among the world’s top 20 most beautiful bookstores, Japan’sTsutaya Bookshas now expanded to Kyoto after opening in Hokkaido and Osaka. Starting today, it becomes a new cultural landmark steeped in literary charm.
Different from other branches, the Kyoto Okazaki Tsutaya Books combines the display of Japanese culture with services tailored to tourists. Its selection includes books on traditional Japanese lifestyles and culture in the “Japanese Life” section, an art book zone, and the “ON JAPAN” section with a wide range of travel guides. There’s also a gallery showcasing works by traditional artisans, as well as a retail space offering carefully selected locally made traditional crafts.

In terms of spatial design, the flooring incorporates materials that reflect the elements of traditional Kyoto townhouses, while the ceiling features hexagon patterns, presenting Kyoto’s traditional culture and showcasing the city’s blend of historical and modern features to travelers from around the world.
Beyond offering a literary atmosphere, Kyoto Okazaki Tsutaya Books caters to travelers by providing a currency exchange machine that handles about 20 different foreign currencies. It is also the first in the Tsutaya bookstore series to offer electric bicycle rentals, with a daily rate of 2,000 yen and a 6-hour rate of 1,200 yen.
