In the Kansai region of Japan, there is an old custom of eating a "Lucky Direction Roll" on the night before the Beginning of Spring. Smiling while facing this year’s lucky direction and finishing the entire roll is believed to bring a full year of good fortune. This year’s Beginning of Spring falls on February 4th, with the lucky direction being south-southeast. Breeze Supermarket will launch authentic Japanese Lucky Direction Rolls on February 3rd for NT$180, allowing those who wish for a year of good luck to eat their “fortune” in one go.

In Japan, a Lucky Direction Roll refers to a thick sushi roll eaten during Setsubun that is believed to bring good luck. It contains seven fillings: kanpyo, tamagoyaki, imitation crab sticks, cucumber, grilled eel, shiitake mushrooms, and sakura denbu—each representing one of the Seven Lucky Gods. When eating it, you must not speak or cut the roll, but instead face the lucky direction (the auspicious direction for the new year, where the god of fortune is said to reside) and finish the entire roll in one go. It is said this can bring good luck to the household, prosperity in business, and a fortunate year ahead. The lucky time for 2016 was on February 3rd, with the lucky direction being south-southeast.
