Toyama City is the gateway to Tateyama Kurobe, attracting many travelers who stay to admire Japan’s most beautiful Starbucks and the scenery of Toyama. If you’re craving fresh seafood, head about a 20-minute drive from Toyama to Uozu City. Located right by the harbor, it offers a daily supply of freshly caught seafood, and you can even watch vendors bid on their catches—earning it the nickname “Toyama’s version of Tsukiji Market.”

Uozu City is just a 20-minute drive from Toyama City and is one of Japan’s most famous spots for viewing mirages. Every spring and summer, you can gaze at mirages appearing over the sea from the riverbank. Additionally, Uozu’s proximity to Toyama Bay gives it a unique geographical advantage, resulting in a rich and abundant variety of fresh seafood.

▲ Some of the day’s freshly caught shrimp can even be eaten raw.
Step inside the Uozu Fisheries Cooperative building next to the fishing port, the main hub for cleaning, sorting, exporting seafood, and where vendors bid for their catches. Boxes of plump seafood are labeled with the names of the fishing boats that caught them. Using pipelines, the seafood is preserved in seawater at different temperatures to maintain its quality. Local fishermen say that because it’s caught the same day, seafood like shrimp can even be eaten raw.

After sorting, local vendors begin bidding based on their daily needs. Auctioneers wearing yellow caps and holding long sticks call out starting prices, followed by a flurry of bids and haggling. For specific seafood like king crabs, which have fewer and more consistent buyers, the process is quieter: each vendor writes their bid on paper after inspecting the day’s catch, then hands it to the auctioneer. The highest bidder wins. Behind this silent auction lies decades of experience working with the sea—an unforgettable sight. Within about an hour, boxes that once filled more than half the warehouse are sold.

▲ There are also set meal options.
After watching the auction, you can also enjoy freshly caught seafood. Next to the Uozu Fisheries Cooperative building is “Umi no Mirage Restaurant,” a complex venue combining a morning market, dining, and fresh seafood sales. For just ¥1,900 (about NT$520), you can order a grilled seafood set, or choose individual items like crab roe, giant clams the size of a palm, or scallops—many of which are caught the same day. Cooked right on the grill, you can enjoy a lavish seafood feast, one of the greatest highlights of visiting Uozu.

Once the fire is blazing, seafood is placed on the iron plate one by one, and special seasoning is added. In about 10–15 minutes, you’ll see abalones start releasing hot juices, while scallops and large clams slowly open up—offering a truly luxurious seafood banquet, one of the greatest pleasures of visiting Uozu.
