However, the surge in applicants has strained staffing resources. As a result, starting in April, the urgent passport processing fee at the airport will be raised from 900 yuan to 3,600 yuan. Adding the original 1,300 yuan processing fee, the total cost will reach 4,900 yuan.

According to a report by CNA, during this year’s Spring Festival holiday, over 200 urgent passports were issued at the airport, nearly double the number from last year. The Bureau of Consular Affairs has emphasized that airport services are meant for “emergencies” rather than routine “appointments.” However, some members of the public prefer not to follow the regular procedure of applying through the Bureau of Consular Affairs and would rather save the time of making an extra trip. But with limited manpower at the airport, the influx of applicants has also affected other urgent services. Therefore, the decision has been made to manage demand through pricing, and a new fee structure will take effect on April 1.

Additionally, the Bureau of Consular Affairs also plans to discontinue the service of processing expired regular passports at the airport. In the future, the public will need to apply for renewals at the Bureau of Consular Affairs or its other service offices.
