Catch a performance at Cloud Gate and try 18-fold soup dumplings with authentic Taiwanese tea

Since its opening last year, Cloud Gate Theatre has attracted 80,000 visitors. In addition to its captivating performances, the serene surroundings and delicious dining options are also major highlights. After the show, don’t rush off—head to Flower Language Restaurant by the lotus pond. Headed by Chef Chang Jui-ching, one of the “Four Heavenly Kings of Din Tai Fung,” it offers 18-fold soup dumplings and Taiwanese teas from Gold Quality Tea Collection.
Flower Language Restaurant, part of the same group as Gold Quality Tea House under Gold Quality Tea, takes its name from Cloud Gate Dance Theatre founder Lin Hwai-min’s choreographed piece “Flower Language.” It joined the project at the very beginning of the theatre’s planning. Chef Liao Chun-kai, who has been with the restaurant since its preparatory phase, shared that“The soup dumplings are made to order. The wrappers can’t sit too long or they’ll stick together and the texture will suffer.”First-time diners can try the “Classic Set,” which includes signature soup dumplings, loofah buns, steamed dumplings, and kimchi pork buns in one satisfying combination.
For those continuing their nature walk, it’s recommended to bring along a bottle of Gold Quality Tea’s cold-brew tea. Chef Liao noted, “The ready-to-drink bottles use triangular tea bags. The bottles and lids are specially selected—they feel premium and the capacity is just right.”

Chef Liao humbly says he’s just “in charge of wrapping the dumplings,” but his deep affection for the Cloud Gate Theatre hasn’t gone unnoticed by Lin Hwai-min. Lin said Chef Liao introduces guests to Cloud Gate’s performances, gives theatre tours, and even takes the initiative to place fresh flowers at the nearby temple of the Earth God.
Chef Liao said, “I pray myself. When I first came here and saw the Earth God temple nearby, I bought cups with the symbols of Fu (Prosperity), Lu (Wealth), and Shou (Longevity) to place there. I also bought tall vases for fresh flowers, but they were too high and kept falling over in the wind, so I switched to shorter ones. On the first and fifteenth of each month, I go pray, buy flowers and fruit, and boil water with an iron kettle to offer tea. As long as I’m working, I go.”
Later, his wife, who often accompanied him to exercise at the nearby golf course, started bringing glass jars for flower arrangements. Someone else, worried the flowers would wilt, gifted him evergreen plants. Now, on the first and fifteenth of each month, Cloud Gate and Da Shu Bookstore also bring cookies and coffee for the prayers. Chef Liao said,“Slowly, it’s become a draw—perhaps it’s because the land here is blessed.”
Flower Language Restaurant has glass walls on three sides, allowing diners to enjoy the green scenery outside while sipping tea and eating dumplings. Chef Liao pointed to the two rows of trees along the pathway outside the window and said, “These two rows of trees in front of the restaurant were blown down twice by typhoons, but we replanted them. I wondered why Director Lin insisted on replanting them?”It turns out these are jacaranda trees. When they’re in full bloom next April, they’ll form a blue tunnel.”
