Japan’s ultra-popular sugar-free chocolate is only available at pharmacies — here’s why

Japanese desserts and snacks come in a wide variety, and just browsing convenience stores can burn a hole in your wallet. Recently, a newsugar-free chocolate called Dr's Chocolatehas become a hot topic because it’s “only available at pharmacies or hospital clinics!”

According to the official website, Dr's Chocolate is currently the only chocolate in the world that displays its GI value (i.e., glycemic index). It contains no sugar, is low in calories, and is made with natural ingredients. In addition to being easier on the body, it can even be consumed by people with diabetes. However, because it displays the GI value, it can only be sold at prescription pharmacies or hospital clinics. It is now available at over 4,000 pharmacies across Japan.
