What comes to mind when you think of Okinawa, Japan? Kokusai Dori, Naminoue Shrine, or American Village? This time, we’re taking you to see the only"Coral Ryukyu Dyeing"in all of Okinawa. This workshop is located right next to the stone monument marking the "Zhongshan Gate Site" of Shuri Castle. Many people may have tried fabric dyeing before, but the tool used here for stamping is "coral reef"—let’s take a look at how it works!

As you enter the workshop, your eyes are immediately drawn to a wealth of ancient tools and fabrics dyed using Ryukyu techniques, including kimonos and household items. Head straight up to the second floor for the experience, where the table is covered with "coral reef fossils"—these are the stamping tools we’ll be using. The staff explains that these coral reef fossils were collected from the shore 40 years ago, then cut and polished into patterns, such as fish or the Okinawan lion. The main colors used are the four primary shades: yellow, blue, red, and purple. The staff explains the stamping method: first, choose a favorite coral reef fossil, place it under the fabric, then pick up a cotton ball dipped in color. Hold the cotton ball in your whole hand and vigorously brush it onto the fabric. Remember, no matter what color combinations you prefer, always start with the lightest yellow to avoid muddying it. There’s a helpful color-matching chart on the underside of the table. If you apply color to just certain sections, you can achieve a gradient rainbow effect!

There are four formats to choose from: a furoshiki (similar to a towel), T-shirts (available in different sizes), coasters (a set of four), and tote bags. You can also use watercolor pens to add details. Each experience session lasts about 30 to 40 minutes. Take a look at all the unique patterns everyone has created—isn’t it super satisfying? Coral has long been a symbol of bringing happiness, and this is the only Ryukyu dyeing experience in all of Okinawa. Be sure to give it a try on your next visit!
