Responding to "Earth Hour" – Taipei 101 to Turn Off Lights Tonight

The international environmental event "Earth Hour" kicked off on the evening of the 19th, with Taipei 101 turning off its exterior lights at 8:30 PM. This marks the sixth year Taiwan has participated in the event, with numerous celebrities joining in, and political figures such as Tainan Mayor Lai Ching-te also releasing videos urging everyone to save energy, reduce carbon emissions, and care for the planet.

In 2007, noticing the annual increase in global carbon dioxide levels leading to climate change and the greenhouse effect, WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) launched the "Earth Hour" campaign, advocating for the turning off of lights for one hour from 8:30 to 9:30 PM on the last Saturday of March each year. The goal is to achieve energy-saving and carbon-reduction effects through this brief act of switching off lights, while further raising public awareness of energy conservation and encouraging its practice in daily life.

"Earth Hour" saw nearly 2.2 million participants in 2007, and the campaign was later promoted worldwide. Over the years, more than 162 countries and 7,000 cities have joined, reaching at least 200 million people.

In Taiwan, the Society of Wilderness has collaborated with WWF since 2010, and this year marks the sixth year of participation. The "Earth Hour" event this year takes place on March 19. Taipei 101 stated that it will once again join the Xinyi Commercial District in responding to the initiative by turning off its exterior lights at 8:30 PM, and is inviting everyone to take part in environmental protection efforts together.

In fact, this year’s event has invited numerous celebrities to participate, including Bii Shu-jen, Show Lo, JJ Lin, Amber An, and Guo Dai-jie, all of whom are calling on the public to join in. Political figures such as Tainan Mayor Lai Ching-te and Taoyuan Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan have also released videos, hoping to inspire collective action.
