Running a marathon overseas isn’t just about chasing personal bests — it’s also about enjoying the quirky sights along the way, crossing the finish line with joy, and combining the race with local tourism, which is especially popular among everyday runners. The “Singapore Sunset Marathon” takes place on an F1 racetrack and is held at night, offering comfortable temperatures and beautiful scenery. If you sign up for the full marathon starting at 1 a.m. (with an 8-hour time limit), you’ll run from darkness into sunrise — a truly unique experience that’s even more fun.

The Sunset Marathon (SUNDOWN MARATHON) is Singapore’s first nighttime marathon. Unlike daytime races, it starts after sunset when the weather is relatively cooler, and runners can enjoy the illuminated scenery along the route. Since its inception in 2008, the Singapore Sunset Marathon has become one of Asia’s most well-known nighttime marathon events. In addition to the full marathon (42KM) and half marathon (21KM), there are also fun runs (5KM) for participants aged 6 and above, as well as a newly added 4-person relay category (10KM). It’s suitable for groups of friends or entire families — truly a sporting carnival. Are you ready?

Each year, the Singapore Sunset Marathon features different promotional slogans, such as: BEAT THE SUNRISE (Conquer the Sunrise), SLEEP CAN WAIT (Sleep Can Wait), LIGHT UP THE CITY (Light Up the City), SHOW YOUR TRUE COLOURS (Show Your True Colors), BRING ON THE NIGHT (Bring On the Night)… and more. The photo shows the 2015 event, themed PULSE OF THE TRIBE (Pulse of the Tribe), where some runners painted their faces to show extra energy.

Although night marathons aren’t as hot, you’ll still get thirsty, hungry, and tired. When you see water, sports drinks, bananas… and other refreshments provided by the organizers, don’t hesitate — take the chance to refuel. And don’t miss the massage chairs provided by title sponsor OSIM, giving your tired legs a little stretch and a lot of relief.

Recognize the person in the photo? That’s Jilémi (nicknamed “Yi Li Mi” in Taiwanese), who once ran around Taiwan carrying the San Taizi (Prince Nezha) statue, showing his love for Taiwan on foot. This foreigner from Provence, France, has made Taiwan his home. He’s written books, loves running, speaks fluent Mandarin and Taiwanese, and even knows indigenous languages like Amis and Bunun. Even when he ran a marathon back in France, he didn’t forget to bring the Taiwanese flag. This year, invited by Southeast Travel Agency, Jilémi will lead Taiwanese runners as a marathon expert in the Singapore Sunset Marathon. Spots are limited, so act fast if you want to join this overseas running adventure.

The 2016 Singapore Sunset Marathon will kick off on May 28, starting from the F1 circuit near the Singapore Flyer. The main venue building features the nationalities and names of global racing drivers, making for a uniquely meaningful experience. As you run, you’ll enjoy the scenery. For those participating in the half and full marathons, the final stretch will loop around Marina Bay, where you’ll take in sights like Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay Sands, and the Esplanade.
