Mirror-like exterior blends with scenery as Japan’s “invisible train” hits tracks in 2018

Japanese railways are not just a means of transporting passengers across the country—they are themselves a moving scenic experience. Seibu Railway recently announced plans to introduce new trains, one of which features a body that reflects the surrounding landscape, making it look almost like an “invisible train.” It is set to begin service in 2018.

According to reports from various Japanese media outlets, the new limited express train by Seibu Railway was designed by world-renowned architect Kazuyo Sejima, with the concept of “blending seamlessly with the scenery” as its design core. The train’s silver mirror-like exterior reflects the passing landscape, giving it an almost invisible appearance. Seibu Railway also stated, “This will be a never-before-seen type of limited express train.”

In addition to its scenery-reflecting exterior, the interior of the carriages will be designed to create a comfortable communal space, akin to a living room at home, allowing passengers to leisurely enjoy the views outside. This train is expected to enter service in 2018.
