Strong 7.0 earthquake hits Kumamoto, Kyushu; aftershocks exceeding magnitude 6 continue

A powerful earthquake with an estimated intensity of 7 and a magnitude of 6.4 struck Kumamoto, Kyushu, Japan at 9:26 p.m. local time on the evening of the 14th. The shaking lasted for as long as 30 seconds, causing many shop items to fall to the ground and shatter. JR Kyushu lines were immediately suspended. Kumamoto Castle, a famous local landmark, also experienced the collapse of stone walls. There are still aftershocks exceeding magnitude 6 in the area.

According to NHK reports, residents of Mashiki Town, the epicenter in Kumamoto Prefecture, have all gathered at evacuation shelters. Aftershocks exceeding magnitude 6 continue to occur in the area, and a woman was buried under collapsed buildings in the epicentral region, currently unconscious.
