In recent years, a “slide craze” has swept across Taiwan, from hotels with slides to high-speed, transparent slides introduced in cities like Kaohsiung and Tainan. However, when it comes to the most iconic slide in Taiwan, the “secret tunnel slide” hidden within Taipei’s Yuan Shan Hotel takes the crown,This 65-year-old slide is 20 meters long and can be traversed in just 9 seconds. It even features a high-speed drift at the last turn. A reporter experienced it firsthand and screamed their lungs out!

Kaohsiung’s Science and Technology Museum features an 18-meter slide that takes as little as 9 seconds, while Tainan’s Shi Gu has a 13.5-meter one completed in 8 seconds. Across Taiwan, fast and transparent slides are being introduced one after another. In fact, Taipei’s Yuan Shan Hotel houses a “secret tunnel slide,” originally designed during its construction to protect national leaders. With over 65 years of history, this slide was once revealed to the public but later closed. ETtoday EBC News Cloud specially applied for access to experience what is claimed to be Asia’s longest and fastest secret tunnel slide.

It is understood that there are two secret tunnels at Taipei’s Yuan Shan Hotel, built in the 41st year of the Republic of China (1952). The eastern one leads to Bei’an Park, and the western one to JianTan Park. The “secret tunnel slide” experienced by the reporter is part of the western tunnel—2.3 meters wide and 2.1 meters high, winding and twisting. The entire tunnel is 85 meters long with a total of 74 steps, while the concrete slide itself is 20 meters long, roughly equivalent to a 9-story building. The tunnel is hidden on the underground second floor. Push open what looks like a regular fireproof metal door, and the well-preserved tunnel appears before your eyes.

Grab the handle, sit at the slide entrance. Despite its 65-year history, thanks to regular maintenance, it still feels nerve-wracking. Let go of the grip and slide down the winding path—so fast at times that your bottom briefly lifts off the slide. The final two big turns reach top speed. The full 20-meter slide takes about 9 seconds to reach the end—absolutely thrilling.
