From late April to early June is the best season for nighttime firefly viewing in New Taipei City. Following last year’s release of 48 hidden firefly-viewing spots, the New Taipei City Agriculture Bureau has this year introduced 52 firefly-viewing locations, allowing the public to plan summer firefly-watching activities while promoting awareness of firefly ecology and the importance of preserving their habitats.

The New Taipei City Agriculture Bureau stated that fireflies are an important indicator insect of ecological health, and even slight environmental changes can greatly affect their survival. There are over 60 types of fireflies discovered across Taiwan, with more than 24 species observable in New Taipei City alone. Moreover, over half of the city's administrative districts are suitable for firefly viewing. However, due to the extremely cold weather earlier this year, this year’s firefly appearances are expected to be slightly later than usual.

The Agriculture Bureau reminds the public to keep quiet while viewing fireflies, avoid entering grassy areas, refrain from littering, and definitely not to catch them or shine bright lights on them. The optimal time for viewing is between 6:30 PM and 8:00 PM—as going too late makes it harder to see the fireflies. Firefly habitats are often found in low-visibility, light-pollution-free mountainous areas, so viewers should prioritize their safety, preferably go in groups, and avoid accidents.
