Singapore’s Changi Airport trials new CT scanners; passengers no longer need to remove laptops during security checks

Currently, when going through airport security, passengers usually have to take out laptops or tablets from their carry-on luggage for separate scanning. Recently, Singapore’s Changi Airport has started trialing a brand-new computed tomography (CT) scanner that allows travelers to skip the hassle of removing electronic devices, speeding up the security process.

The new scanners will be tested starting next month at two checkpoints in Terminal 3 of Changi Airport. Changi Airport is the first in Asia to use this type of equipment. The new scanners can create 360-degree, three-dimensional images of items inside carry-on bags, so passengers no longer need to remove electronics—simply place the bag on the tray, and it will be scanned.

The new scanners are equipped with diverging baggage conveyor belts. Items that fail the initial scan will be routed to a separate belt for further inspection by customs officers. Additionally, the scanners feature an automatic baggage tray return system, allowing trays for two passengers to be scanned simultaneously.

Changi Airport has also introduced a new full-body scanner, which has been in use since March. In addition to detecting metal, the new device uses the principle that skin and clothing reflect and absorb microwaves differently to produce clear images, revealing non-metallic items hidden under clothing.

It is reported that after the two-month trial period ends in June, Changi Airport will analyze the data before deciding whether to implement the systems airport-wide.
