If you didn’t read the text and only looked at the images and short film, you’d probably think that the Japanese national treasure Hayao Miyazaki—who has repeatedly announced his retirement only to come back—has a new work? Or that Studio Ghibli, under his direction, has a new collaboration with another company? The short film, where “every frame could be a wallpaper,” actually serves as a tourism promotional video for the U.S. state of Oregon, titled “Only Slightly (More) Exaggerated,” showcasing the magical and heartwarming experiences awaiting travelers in Oregon.
Oregon, a state on the U.S. West Coast, is renowned for its unspoiled natural beauty. To promote tourism, the local semi-official tourism agency Travel Oregon recently collaborated with long-time partner advertising firm Wieden+Kennedy, along with production studios Psyop and Sun Creature Studios, and composer Jim Dooley, to create this animation. In fact, this new piece is a continuation of last year’s promotional short film “Only Slightly Exaggerated.” Both share the same concept but highlight different attractions.

The promotional animation takes “only slightly exaggerated” as its theme—you can decide for yourself whether it’s “just a little” or “a lot.” However, Oregon, nicknamed the Beaver State, truly boasts stunning scenery. From the coast to the inland mountains and from cities to forests, all naturally become part of the film, including the famous Oregon Caves National Monument and Mount St. Helens. The video also features the beaver (Oregon’s state animal), Oregon grape (the state flower), western meadowlark (the state bird), and Douglas fir (the state tree). Viewers can also enjoy photographs of Southern Oregon’s coastline taken by photographer Nathaniel Wise (related article) to experience the area’s natural beauty.
