Creating an Asian baking miracle — the "2019 Taipei International Bakery & Equipment Show" officially opened on March 15 at the Nangang Exhibition Center. This edition is bigger than ever, with the four-day event (March 15–18), featuring 417 exhibitors and a total of 1,800 booths, both setting new records. Additionally, 13 international exhibitors participated with 27 booths, also the highest number to date.

In recent years, Taiwanese bakers have won championships, and various industries have entered the baking sector, leading to the booming development of the baking industry. "Baking fever among the public" has become a trend, and the Taipei International Bakery & Equipment Show has garnered significant attention from both industry insiders and outsiders. Comparing visitor numbers from the previous two editions, there were 157,000 in 2017 and over 160,000 in 2018. The organizers conservatively estimate this year’s attendance will exceed 165,000, maintaining the year-on-year growth trend.

In terms of booth numbers by category, baking raw materials and equipment account for the largest share, with booth numbers also growing year by year. Notably, the number of booths for baking peripherals such as tableware and kitchenware is also increasing annually, second only to baking raw materials and equipment, symbolizing how the growth of the baking industry is driving business opportunities in related products.

A rich array of competitions and forums kick off, with a focus on "innovative traditional Chinese pastries"

The fourth floor is set up as a competition area, hosting events such as the "Innovative Traditional Chinese Pastry Competition," "2019 UIBC World Cup Junior Pastry Competition Taiwan Representative Selection," "2019 Asian Cup Pastry Competition Taiwan Representative Selection," and the "Gâteaux Cup Cake Skills Competition." The spotlight this year is on the "Innovative Traditional Chinese Pastry Competition," with 15 teams making it to the finals. In addition to redesigning appearances and fillings to appeal to the younger market, they must also retain the craftsmanship and flavor of traditional pastries. The first-ever champion of the Innovative Traditional Chinese Pastry Competition will be selected on March 17.

Raw material/finished product area — Nankang has the largest presence   with eye-catching booths from major players like Demarle and Lian Hwa

The largest exhibitor in the raw material/finished product area is Nankang (Booth 105), which not only showcases products such as frozen dough and fats but also continues the "New Traditional Chinese Pastry Trend" from previous years by setting up booths that mimic individual pastry shops. Notably, in line with the innovative pastry trend, Nankang will invite 20 veteran, mid-career, and young pastry chefs from across Taiwan to demonstrate their skills live for the first time this year. Under the theme "Gathering of Pastry Masters," the goal is to shine the spotlight on the behind-the-scenes artisans, while also displaying best-selling products in collaboration with partner brands, creating an exhibition akin to a "Traditional Chinese Pastry Museum." Demarle Foods (Booth 47) is promoting its "RUBY CHOCOLATE" and "Four Leaf Select Fresh Milk" this year. RUBY CHOCOLATE, made from pink cocoa beans and once a designated dessert for the Oscars banquet, is making its first appearance in Taiwan. Demarle is also offering a free branded tote bag with any single purchase over NT$2,000, and free registration for a "Happy Food Time Experience Class" to make Belgian waffles using the day’s receipt.

Lian Hwa Industrial, a leading domestic flour manufacturer, is promoting its "New Gaoshan Organic Whole Wheat Flour," made from 100% Taiwanese wheat, ground locally, and cultivated under "environmentally friendly" contracts. Purchasing flour or pasta for NT$249 or more earns you a free "Bag of Heritage – A’Tuo Shopping Bag." Present your receipt that day to sign up for a free "Happy Food Time Experience Classroom" to DIY Belgian waffles.

Other highlights include Fu Hua’s collaboration with world bread champion Chen Yaoxun on "Kumamoto Flour" and 3.7 fresh milk directly from Hakodate, Hokkaido; Chien Hua’s "Kyushu Pancake Mix" and other products; Feng Meng offering buy-10-get-1-free deals on old-style meat buns, while "Dian Shui Lou," a renowned eatery using Feng Meng flour, also features chef demonstrations and on-site promotions. Additionally, Wang Dai is offering discounts of up to 70% off on Lotus cookware and baking peripherals, drawing large crowds.

2019 Highlight: "Innovative Fashion Trends and the Home Baking Business Opportunity"

"Cross-industry integration" is a trend in the baking industry in recent years. In addition to sections for raw materials and equipment, this year’s baking show also includes a second edition of its coffee and wine zones, with continued expansion. The equipment zone, featuring major booths from Sunma, Central Motors, Wang Dai, Den, Jammy, and Jinko, is a must-visit for professional bakers. Other baking peripherals such as Yusheng Catering, Huajue Costumes, and Alien Tableware are also offering special deals.

Home "stay-at-home" baking is a trend, and many brands emphasize "innovation and fashion." Merely having high-quality equipment materials and ingredients is no longer enough — the appearance must also catch consumers’ eyes, exuding a sense of style and generating buzz. Heyang is promoting silicone dessert molds in collaboration with Cédric Grolet, the Michelin three-star pastry chef, which can create hyper-realistic lemon and hazelnut-shaped cakes; Zhen Yi Marble Company is unveiling its "Marble Rolling Pin + Cutting Board" combo for a fashionable rolling pin experience; Tejia is launching, for the first time in Taiwan, the world’s top-selling KitchenAid 4.8L countertop mixer in its 2019 Taiwan-exclusive 4-color range, paired with a limited-edition ceramic pearl jar, all offered at the show’s lowest prices; Heng Long Hang represents France’s Magimix food processor, the world’s first home-use model; Pin Yan Industrial is introducing Italy’s SMEG’s latest British-flag-themed toaster, one of the first global batches, which can directly defrost, heat, and bake bagels and thick slices of bread.

Furthermore, businesses see potential in the "single-person baking" market — no baking skills needed, just a microwave to get started. KP Kitchen has developed DIY microwave baking mixes — allowing you to easily whip up a single-serving, all-vegan microwave cake in just 5 minutes. Each set includes a stylish mug, two DIY baking mixes (vanilla and chocolate), a measuring spoon, and cake decorations. No special equipment is required; simply bake in the microwave for 60 seconds to enjoy a perfect single-serving treat. The "lazy economy" is booming, and Ming Hao Industrial is offering "Belgian Brussels Frozen Pancakes" — no need to buy flour or milk, just heat the frozen pancakes for a simple and convenient treat.

Baking bread at home is both healthy and therapeutic, and businesses are capitalizing on the "healing economy" by promoting automated home baking. Jiaying Industrial’s "パンの鍋 (Pound Pot) Bread Maker" is the world’s first to automatically detect climate conditions, enabling delicious bread to be made anytime, anywhere. With 32 smart menu options, it can knead dough, ferment, and bake, replacing the need for a rice cooker — even baking beginners can make perfect bread. For those wanting to make yogurt at home, Datong Ying is launching the "Pinno Fermentation Beauty Machine," which can produce yogurt, kimchi, rice?, and even onsen eggs. Unlike regular yogurt machines, its adjustable temperature control keeps fermentation accuracy within ±1°C.
