Indulge in a century-old tradition of afternoon tea — Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok Authors’ Lounge

Standing on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok is renowned for its high level of service, and the “Authors' Wing,” built over 130 years ago, is the most famous part of the hotel. The name “Authors' Wing” comes from the many renowned writers who have stayed here, such as British literary giant Somerset Maugham and romance novelist Barbara Cartland. The Authors’ Lounge on the first floor of the Authors' Wing is where you can enjoy afternoon tea. In this spacious all-white setting, comfortably furnished with rattan tables and chairs, accented by greenery like palm trees and bamboo, the space exudes a romantic and elegant atmosphere.

The afternoon tea here is available in both English and Thai styles. The English afternoon tea is a set of three-tiered pastries and a pot of tea, priced at around NT$1,400, with generous portions suitable for 2–3 people to share. First served is a lemon granita, slightly tangy yet sweet, refreshingly delicious on the palate. Next comes the three-tiered pastry stand, filled with a rich variety of treats such as caramel pudding, chocolate cake, and fruit cheesecake, with the bottom layer featuring finger sandwiches and savory tarts. The highlight of this tea experience is the scone—the secret to its deliciousness lies in the premium ingredients imported from the UK, along with handcrafting by skilled chefs, resulting in a soft and fluffy texture. Topped with butter and fresh jam, the layered flavors are simply astonishing. The tea selection at Authors’ Lounge comes from the renowned French brand Mariage Frères, with many flavors to choose from, and the teapot can be refilled for free when you order the afternoon tea set.

After enjoying a relaxing afternoon tea, step outside to find an elegantly landscaped garden filled with flowers and greenery. Walking along the garden path leads you to the end where the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok’s private boat pier is located, with the Chao Phraya River coming into view. The river is bustling with various passenger boats shuttling back and forth, creating a unique riverside ambiance.
