During the 228 Holiday, various temple courtyards and village homes in Kaohsiung’s Neimen District will host “troupe visits” where performance troupes take turns showcasing their skills in front of local Songjiang Halls, engaging in friendly competitions. This serves as a warm-up for the Neimen Songjiang Formation event taking place at Neimen Zhuzhu Temple from March 3 to 11.

According to local cultural historian Teacher Chen Congxian, a “troupe visit” involves two performance troupes taking turns to perform. After each performance, the host troupe serves tea and prepares signature dishes by Neimen’s master chefs. This tradition allows performers to catch up, stay fit, and strengthen community bonds through practice sessions.
After the “troupe visits,” the people of Neimen will welcome the birthday of Guanyin Bodhisattva (the 19th day of the second lunar month, which falls on March 10 this year) with performance troupe parades. This is a long-standing tradition in Neimen. The area’s performing arts culture is thriving, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors and worshippers every year. With the box office success of the film “Formation,” more and more people are becoming interested in this traditional cultural art form and eager to experience the life of performance troupes beyond the screen—this is a great opportunity to do so.
