The Taiwan Museum is hosting the “Digital Time Machine – Stories of Those Years Special Exhibition” from now until April 15. The exhibition is divided into themes such as the early “Taipei Sky,” various “Cultural Ethnic Groups” across Taiwan, and the nostalgic “Life and Entertainment.” With nostalgia as its starting point, the exhibition showcases the various lifestyles and historical customs preserved in Taiwan, allowing everyone to find their own special stories from those years.

The exhibits include performance posters, personal photos, and theatrical video clips of puppetry master Li Tien-lu; classic songs left behind by Taiwanese ballad king Hong Yifeng, who represented the 1960s in Taiwan, such as “Old Love Lingers On,” “Sunset over Tamsui,” “The One I Long For,” “Ballad of Taiwan’s Four Seasons,” and “Taiwan Mambo,” among other renowned musical works; as well as treasured photos and manuscripts of contemporary literary master Yu Guangzhong, depicting the development of Taiwanese literature and art during that era.
The digital results of the “Hong Yifeng Virtual Music Museum” exhibited in this special showcase consist of 30 themes, with nearly three years spent on oral history collection. Viewers will discover that these are all stories from everyday Taiwanese life, and the songs sung represent Taiwan’s history—just as Hong Yifeng famously said, “As long as someone is listening, we must sing with dedication.”

This special exhibition is jointly organized by the Taiwan Museum and the National Digital Archives Program for Digital Archives and Digital Learning. The digital archives and learning outcomes portal at digitalarchives.tw features tens of thousands of precious images, including old photos from before 1960, as well as postcards, documents, and book illustrations from the same period. The public can also browse these rich materials that carry Taiwan’s history online, reminisce about the old days’ local culture, or further utilize them for research and teaching.
