The Zhu Ming Art Museum will present its annual major exhibition, the themed showcase “The Development of Taiwanese Sculpture in the 1970s,” on March 16. To further promote awareness of the art and localism movements of the 1970s and to inspire greater attention and scholarly inquiry, a two-day symposium will be held on March 31 and April 1 at the International Conference Hall (Room 202) on the second floor of the College of Education Building at National Taiwan Normal University.

In March 1976, artist Zhu Ming held his first solo exhibition at the National History Museum, which established his status in the art world. His works rich in local imagery garnered widespread attention and discussion within Taiwan’s cultural circles and were later regarded as key representations of the art scene during the 1970s Taiwanese localism movement. As such, the 1970s hold significant meaning for Zhu Ming—it was a pivotal and extraordinary time in his life.
This symposium will feature 16 scholars and artists, including artist Zhu Ming, Zhu Ming Art Museum Director Wu Shunling, Professor Hsiao A-chin from the Institute of Sociology at Academia Sinica, How Art magazine publisher He Zhengguang, Department Chair Liu Baicun of the Sculpture Department at Taipei National University of the Arts, artist and art history researcher Lin Xingyue, and Director Chen Fangming of the Graduate Institute of Taiwanese Literature at National Chengchi University. They will present specialized papers analyzing and discussing the profound impact of this historical period’s social context and background on the history of Taiwanese sculpture.
The “The Development of Taiwanese Sculpture in the 1970s” themed exhibition runs until September 30. For exhibition-related information and registration details for forums, please visit the official website: www.juming.org.tw.
