Although most foreign tourists currently enter Taiwan by air, given the growing trend of cruise tourism in the Asian market and Taiwan’s geography—surrounded by sea with numerous ports suitable for cruise ship docking—the Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications announced at the world’s largest cruise exhibition, Cruise Shipping Miami, held in Florida on March 12, that cruise ships visiting Taiwan with 250 or more passengers can receive an incentive of USD 10 to 25 per passenger.

To encourage international cruise ships to dock in Taiwan and help the local tourism industry attract more foreign cruise traffic, the Tourism Bureau issued the “Incentive Guidelines for Promoting International Cruise Ships to Visit Taiwan” in February this year. The incentives are targeted at foreign cruise companies that operate international cruise routes and have decision-making power over port calls. The incentive is calculated based on the number of inbound foreign passengers on cruise ships docking at Taiwanese ports, excluding crew members, staff, and passengers holding Republic of China (Taiwan) nationality.
