In 125 years, Taiwan Railways’ first female driver will officially take up her post in August this year. Currently, these two female trainees have both completed 4.5 months of theoretical education in the driver training class at the Taiwan Railways Administration’s Employee Training Center and have now begun on-the-job driving learning training. Once they pass the relevant driver qualification review and assessment, it is estimated that they will officially become qualified drivers in August and December of this year respectively.

Taiwan Railways Administration has been recruiting female technical staff since 2008. The administration’s first female driver graduated from a master's program at a national university. Chen Shuying, who graduated from a national university with a degree in electrical engineering, also joined the female driver training program in 2010. To accommodate female employees taking on driver roles, Taiwan Railways specially designed a women's uniform made from blended wool fabric, in navy blue with a single row of three gold buttons.

Additionally, in consideration of women’s workplace safety, apart from being issued personal alarms and whistles, female drivers are assigned to independent, dedicated standby dormitories equipped with surveillance cameras to prevent any incidents of harassment.
