The 2012 New Taipei City Film Festival officially kicked off today (April 27) and will run until May 13. Themed “Flowers of the World,” the festival reflects the diversity of New Taipei City’s migrant population. The curatorial team selected 72 outstanding films from 35 countries and regions including Taiwan, the UK, Germany, France, South Korea, India, China, Brazil, Croatia, and the Czech Republic.

This year, special focus has been placed on themes related to “new immigrant culture.” Films such as “Wild Orchid Fragrance,” “Golden Grandchild,” “Moonlight Over Jilin,” and “Debbie’s Happy Life” are all highly recommended. The festival also includes numerous award-winning films, such as “Pina,” nominated for “Best Documentary Feature” at the Oscars; “People Mountain People Sea,” which portrays the lives of Chinese miners and beat strong contenders like “A Simple Life” to win the “Silver Lion Award” at the Venice Film Festival; “Big Guy’s Secret Diary,” which won the “Silver Bear Award” at the Berlin International Film Festival; “The Pope’s Toilet,” nominated in 2011 for the official competition at the Cannes Film Festival by jury president Nanni Moretti; “She, a Chinese,” an autobiographical film directed by writer and filmmaker Guo Xiaolu, who gained popularity in the West with her “Chinese-English Lovers’ Dictionary”; and “Thursday Till Sunday,” which won the “Tiger Award” at the Rotterdam International Film Festival...

The Department of Cultural Affairs stated that the “fixed-location screenings” of the 2012 New Taipei City Film Festival will take place from April 28 to May 13 at four venues: Zhongshan 15, Vieshow Cinemas at DX, World United Formosan University President Hotel, and Conference Room 507 at the New Taipei City Government, with a total of 150 screenings. Those who purchase the festival pass can also redeem an exclusive gift at designated MUJI stores while supplies last. Moviegoers can purchase tickets at 7-Eleven ibon kiosks, with single tickets priced at NT$100 and festival passes offering six tickets for NT$300.
