June 8th is the internationally designated World Oceans Day. Starting tomorrow, the Chiayi Forest District Office of the Forestry Bureau and the Society of Wilderness will hold the “2012 World Oceans Day – Igniting New Hope for the Ocean – Ocean Film Screening Series.” Through internationally renowned films such as “Flying Fish,” “Sold Down the River,” and “Deep Blue Sea,” the public will be guided to understand the current state of the oceans. The series also includes ocean-themed lectures titled “Seeing the Ocean Anew” and “Sustainable Seafood,” aiming to help the public appreciate the value of the oceans and awaken their care and protection for marine environments.
Taiwan, as an island nation, is inseparable from the ocean. The organizers hope that through the ocean film screenings, the public will gain a deeper understanding of the preciousness of the ocean. (Photo provided by Zoe Lee)
The opening film of the ocean film series is “Flying Fish,” which will premiere on the evening of June 8th at the plaza in front of the Cypress Forest Life Village of the Chiayi Forest Management Office. This film is a narrative ecological documentary produced by the production company behind Oscar-nominated documentaries such as “The Story of the Weeping Camel” and “March of the Penguins.” It depicts the journey of an endangered hawksbill turtle, born on the coast of Florida, USA, which embarks on a life-risking, over 10,000-kilometer voyage across the vast Atlantic Ocean over 25 years in search of its home.
Additionally, “Sold Down the River,” which explores the relationship between tourism and marine ecological resources, will be screened on July 27th, and “Deep Blue Sea,” which examines ocean conservation from an aerial perspective, will be shown on September 14th. Besides the film screenings, two ocean-themed lectures will be held in the auditorium of the Chiayi Forest District Office. On July 7th, the lecture “Seeing the Ocean Anew” will allow the audience to experience the richness and importance of Taiwan’s marine ecology through film. On August 4th, the “Sustainable Seafood” lecture will explain the connection between the seafood on our plates and marine conservation.
