When mentioning the “Lion City” Singapore, one naturally thinks of the Merlion statue standing proudly by the Singapore River. Since 1972, the Merlion has watched over the Lion City for 40 years, and this year, September 15 will mark its 40th birthday. In celebration, the Merlion will undergo renovation starting now until the end of August and is expected to reopen to the public in September. Visitors to Singapore will then get to see a brand-new Merlion statue.

The Merlion statue was created from concrete by the late Singaporean craftsman Lim Nang Seng and has quietly stood at the mouth of the Singapore River for the past 30 years, guarding the ships passing through. In 2002, due to urban redevelopment, the Merlion was relocated to a new spot about 120 meters from its original location. The new site spans 2,500 square meters—four times larger than the old site across the bridge. In addition to a specially designed lighting system, the park also features an observation deck, event space, and a water taxi dock, offering convenience for visitors.
During the renovation period, renowned illustrator Elaine Chan will create playful murals on the exterior construction walls, depicting the Merlion taking a vacation, visiting the zoo, and going to the Jurong Bird Park. These murals are expected to be completed and officially displayed starting July 5.

In celebration of the Merlion’s 40th birthday, the Singapore Tourism Board is also hosting a series of events. Travelers worldwide can share their personal stories and travel experiences with the Merlion via photos or text on the dedicated website. Additionally, from September 12 to 16 during the Merlion’s reopening period, a laser light show will be held to welcome global visitors with a refreshed look.
