Holiday trips to the East Coast aren’t just about beautiful landscapes—there are also amazing crafts waiting for you to experience. The 2012 Kaluluan Handicraft Market takes place every Saturday and Sunday from 4:30 PM to 9:00 PM at the Kaluluan Recreation Area in Taitung City from July 7 to July 29. With the theme of wind, the event features different “wind-inspired” competitions weekly, such as kite-making, windmill crafting, wind chime designing, and pop art. There will also be seaside concerts, over 30 creative market stalls, and performances by international bands. Visitors can stroll through the market on summer evenings and enjoy the beauty of the East Coast night.

The Kaluluan Handicraft Market gathers art enthusiasts from the East Coast who come together in a market-style setting to showcase and sell their handmade creations. These include stalls offering tree bark lanterns, sedge leaf baskets, indigenous woven bags, and seed necklaces. Additionally, the first 100 visitors each week can enjoy free samples of pounded taro, sweet potato balls, millet rice, and other local snacks, along with DIY craft activities.
In addition to continuing the unique handmade craft market tradition of the East Coast, this year’s event also includes the “Wind Series Creative Competition.” Judging for the competitions is held every Saturday, and participants can use any materials they like—but must assemble and create their works on-site. East Coast driftwood artists will also publicly display five driftwood installation artworks on the opening day, July 7, within the Kaluluan Recreation Area: “Sabu ’Ga-Tzaw – The Secret of the Crab Man,” “Dafang ’Ga-Herdi / The Origin of the Rainbow,” “Shiju Sufi / [The Sea God],” and “Musa.”

Additionally, each Saturday’s “Seaside Concert” will feature international-themed nights such as Bollywood Indian dance, Middle Eastern belly dance, and Spanish flamenco. Local groups like Zhizhong Elementary School’s Traditional Dance Team, lN 汊涞 Art Group, Xiao Du Band, Black Child Band, and Energetic Band will also perform. Sundays’ “One Night in the East Coast” will offer selections including summer jazz, romantic folk songs, enchanting blues, and soulful saxophone music, allowing visitors to unwind and enjoy the East Coast evening.
