Tchaikovsky’s legendary love life will be brought to life through his "Serenade," "Violin Concerto," and classical ballet choreography by Taipei Chamber Ballet. The performance will take place at 19:30 tomorrow (4th) at Zhongshan Hall in Taichung City. The dance is choreographed by Yu Nengsheng, deputy artistic director of the Graz Opera Ballet in Austria, and features soloists Canila Bogdan Stefan and Djmaru Cristina Alexandra from the Romanian National Ballet, along with domestic dancers Cheng Youci, Liao Yitang, Gao Yongyu, Zhuang Shixian, and Lin Boru. Combining Tchaikovsky’s poignant and romantic music with classical ballet, the performance unfolds in five acts depicting the composer’s experiences with family, friendship, and love — including his unique 13-year platonic relationship with Madame von Meck, the only one of its kind in music history.

The renowned Russian composer Tchaikovsky, known for his slightly melancholic musical style, also had a legendary love life. Many of Tchaikovsky’s compositions were written under the influence of various emotional experiences. This ballet focuses on his life, portraying his encounters with familial love, friendship, romance, and even rumored same-sex relationships through acts titled "Beloved Mother" – dependent love, "Woman" – yearned-for love, "Marriage" – love without fruition, "Madame von Meck" – platonic love, and "Same Sex" – idealized love.

Tchaikovsky’s relationship with Madame von Meck began in 1877 and spanned thirteen years, during which they exchanged over 1,100 letters discussing music, musicians, religion, and their innermost thoughts. Through these letters, Madame von Meck came to understand Tchaikovsky’s financial struggles and admired his musical talent, leading her to offer him an annual stipend of 6,000 rubles — equivalent to over NT$2.7 million today. However, the two agreed never to meet in person. With this financial support, Tchaikovsky dedicated himself to composition, dedicating his Symphony No. 4, completed in 1878, to Madame von Meck. In 1890, Madame von Meck claimed she was facing bankruptcy and had to cease her financial assistance, also ending their 13-year correspondence. Deeply affected, Tchaikovsky completed his Symphony No. 6 in 1893 before passing away due to illness.

Beyond his famous ballets like Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker, Tchaikovsky composed numerous other works suitable for dance. For this production, the "Serenade" and "Violin Concerto" were selected to convey the boundless imagination of his music. Through the elegant and expressive lines of classical ballet and the tension of drama, the performance interprets and depicts Tchaikovsky’s emotional journey.
