Sea Market Crab Catching & Kaohsiung Wave Roll Festival Kicks Off This Weekend

This weekend in the port city of Kaohsiung, besides popular night markets and well-known shopping malls, the upcoming "2012 Kaohsiung Wave Roll Festival" to be held at the Lover’s Wharf of Xingda Port in Qieding District from 2:00 pm to 8:30 pm on September 1–2, will not only feature aquatic product gift exhibitions, local seafood snacks, and displays of coast guard vessels and equipment, but also offer a highly praised free Sea Market experience. Visitors can take a sampan ride to visit cage aquaculture farms, and learn fishing activities such as casting nets and catching crabs. In addition, paid water activities including heavy sailboat rides, canoeing, sea fishing experiences, and harbor cruises are also planned, allowing visitors to enjoy a fun-filled port city holiday.

The Wave Roll Festival has entered its fourth year, and this year’s event adds a free guided tour of the mangrove bird-watching wetlands, taking visitors to explore the important local ecological area — the Qieding Drainage Canal. Along the way, you can admire mangroves, egrets, night herons, and the ancient Zhuhu Salt Fields, and enjoy views of local fishing boats and homes from a sampan ride. During the festival period, there will also be a seafood roll cuisine showcase teaching creative fish roll making, along with tasting sessions. Local community performances and flash sales of special discount goods are also arranged, while the nights feature dazzling fireworks, water shows, and live band performances to accompany visitors spending their weekend at Lover’s Wharf of Xingda Port.
