Taiwanese contemporary art master of calligraphic art, Dong Yangzhi, following her 2009 exhibition “Ink Rhyme Boundless,” is once again showcasing “Urban Gateway Art Museum Precinct Public Art Installation Project – Dong Yangzhi: ‘Silent Symphony · Variations’” from today through October 14. Co-curated with architect Huang Yiqing and musician Lee Shou-chuan, the exhibition arranges a hundred calligraphy works within the KMFA Sculpture Hall space as a unified piece, allowing the public to appreciate them from various heights and angles in the museum. In addition, an outdoor concert on the museum plaza tomorrow (31st) evening will feature diverse performances by musicians such as Lim Shiong Hsiang and Chang Hsuan, accompanied by projections of the calligraphy works onto screens, creating an overlapping visual and auditory art experience for audiences.

In 2011, Dong Yangzhi selected 100 character works that she had previously collected and couldn’t bear to discard, had them framed, and was inspired by the different brushstrokes created through the process of varying pressure and speed—such as feibai (flashing white), thick and thin lines—which resonated with the flowing rhythm and musicality of music. Thus, she named this series “Silent Symphony.” These hundred ink dots are categorized based on their diverse expressions, including those with bold force, thick ink, and coarse lines; those with light, quick strokes full of dancing, swirling lines; and those with ample blank space occasionally dotted with ink marks or strokes. The installation even deliberately inverts some works upside down, allowing the hundred pieces to form a “variation” that presents changes, densities, contrasts, weights, and themes akin to a painting.
Architect Huang Yiqing utilized the spacious and lofty unique space of the KMFA Sculpture Hall to arrange the hundred works into a unified whole. The display design cascades like a waterfall from top to bottom, not only evoking the momentum of “the Yellow River’s waters descending from the heavens,” but also featuring surrounding corridors on different floors of the museum hall, providing visitors with viewing points at various heights, as well as more diverse perspectives and methods of appreciation.

Additionally, this event combines the concepts of calligraphic art and musical creation. With musician Lee Shou-chuan serving as music director, an outdoor concert will be held at 19:30 tomorrow (31st) evening. The works from the “Silent Symphony” series will be projected onto a screen as a backdrop, emerging, receding, lingering, or drifting along with the performances of different musicians, overlapping into scenes and shadows. Musical performances by diverse artists such as Lim Shiong Hsiang, Chang Hsuan, VOX Play Voice Band, Lu Chia-hung, Fan Tsung-pei, and Su Tzu-yin will allow concertgoers to enjoy not just music, but also a visual feast.
