The series of performances at the "2012 Sun Moon Lake International Fireworks Music Carnival," which will launch on October 13 at Ita Thao PierperformancesOn October 20, the "Les Misérables—Rising from Adversity" concert will feature the Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Chiang Ching-po, with coloratura soprano Huang Xuan-wen and operatic tenor Wang Dian performing five Tony Award-winning songs from the musical "Les Misérables," including "One Day More" and "On My Own." The performance will be paired with a spectacular fireworks display to offer a unique classical music experience that blends timeless theater with dazzling pyrotechnics.

On October 20, the concert will bring the internationally acclaimed musical "Les Misérables," which has been performed over 10,000 times in London and more than 7,000 times on Broadway and has won multiple awards including the Tony Awards, to Taiwan. The program will also include Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 "Pathétique," conveying redemption amidst despair; operas like "La forza del destino" and "Lucia di Lammermoor," breaking free from the whirlpool of fate; "La Traviata," portraying undying love within a tragic life; and Stravinsky’s "Firebird Suite," ultimately pointing toward rebirth through fire.
The story of "Les Misérables" depicts the grim lives of the poor in that era. The protagonist steals bread out of kindness, ends up in prison, and upon release tries to live a reformed life, but faces discrimination and oppression everywhere. Forced to change his identity and start anew while continuing to do good, he is relentlessly pursued by a police officer representing law and justice. The entire musical delivers a powerful message about the importance of kindness and forgiveness, even in the face of adversity and poverty.
In addition, Lion Travel has designed a special one-day group tour to Sun Moon Lake for the October 20 concert, limited to 200 participants. The cost is NT$1,099 per person, and if four people sign up, the fourth person can enjoy a discounted rate of NT$520, plus reserved seating for the concert.
