When traveling, aside from enjoying scenic views and cultural heritage sites, sampling local specialties is also a key part of the experience for travelers. To promote regional cuisine, the Tourism Bureau is holding the “2012 Taiwan Group Meal Showdown” from now until November 30. In addition to having judges and mystery diners conduct on-site visits to shortlisted restaurants, the event will select the most representative and tourist-recommended eateries in each city and county from among 144 finalists offering dishes such as seafood, beef noodles, live fish, and chicken rice. The public can also vote online, with participants eligible to win prizes such as tablets and air fryers.

The shortlisted restaurants are divided into three price categories for separate voting: Budget Meals (35 restaurants, under NT$2,500 per table), Premium Meals (52 restaurants, NT$2,501–NT$4,000 per table), and Gourmet Meals (57 restaurants, NT$4,001–NT$10,000 per table). The featured local ingredients and dishes include Keelung squid, Taipei beef noodles, Taoyuan Shihmen live fish, Hsinchu pork meatballs, Taichung Dajia taro, Changhua rice pudding, Chiayi chicken rice, Tainan Qigu milkfish, Yilan kumquat, Hualien monkfish, and Matsu fried red yeast eel.

The top 10 from each meal category—totaling 30 restaurants—will be selected, and the final results are expected to be announced in mid-December. Online voting has already begun and will feature a two-stage lottery. Each person can cast up to five votes per day for different categories. Participants will have the chance to winprizes such astablets, air fryers, instant cameras, bread machines, and convenience store gift cards. For more details, visit: tfood.taiwan.net.tw.
