The annual surf season is back in full swing. Today (the 12th), the opening ceremony of the VANS Triple Crown of Surfing, a million-dollar event hosted by Vitaminwater in Honolulu, was held. The first leg of the Triple Crown—the Lagoon Pros competition—will take place between November 12 and November 24, selecting the four best surfing days to hold the Lagoon Pros contest at Haleiwa Aliʻi Beach Park.

This winter, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Triple Crown, the champion will receive a commemorative prize bag along with a $100,000 cash bonus. In addition to individual events and the overall title, the final event—the Pipe Masters—will determine this year’s ASP World Champion. Throughout the six-week Triple Crown series, the surfer who puts on the best aerial performance will be awarded 250,000 HawaiianMiles by Hawaiian Airlines. Randy Rarick, CEO of the Triple Crown, said that no matter the wave size in Haleiwa, the wave height is perfect for performing, making it the ideal stage for the 2012 Hawaiian Airlines Airshow. The Hawaiian Airlines Airshow will showcase all technical and advanced aerial maneuvers performed by top athletes such as John Florence from Hawaii, Dane Reynolds from California, Gabriel Medina from Brazil, Josh Kerr from Australia, and last year’s airshow winner Nat Young from California.
In addition to the first week of the Triple Crown events, there will also be other activities including storytelling sessions at the Surfer’s Restaurant on November 14 at 1 PM, 2 PM, and 8 PM, with screenings of classic films; and the John Kelly Surfrider Award Ceremony at Waimea Valley on November 17. Each of the three Triple Crown events lasts two weeks, with 3–4 of the most surf-friendly days selected for competition.
