As Christmas draws nearer, famous Christmas markets across Europe begin to light up in celebration. Germany’s Christmas markets have a history spanning several hundred years, and Nuremberg is one of the oldest and most renowned, with the event lasting nearly a full month. This year, it will take place from November 30 to December 24 in the central square.

Nuremberg was once the imperial city of the Holy Roman Emperors and reached economic prosperity during the Middle Ages. During World War II, Hitler gave speeches here, and after the war, the Allied forces conducted the “Nuremberg Trials” against the Nazis, all of which contributed to its fame. Today, the smoke of war has long dissipated, and Nuremberg is now best known internationally for its Toy Fair and Christmas market.
The old town of Nuremberg is still surrounded by walls built in the 13th century. The streets once bustling with horse-drawn carriages are now pedestrian zones. The Imperial Castle perched on the hill witnesses Nuremberg’s historical significance and adds to the charming medieval atmosphere of the ancient city. At the Frauenkirche, an impressive clock chime show takes place daily at 12 noon, depicting the scene where seven Prince-Electors pledge allegiance to Emperor Charles IV. The “Golden Bull” issued by Charles IV established that the emperor would be chosen by the seven Prince-Electors, thereby solidifying their status and privileges.

The central square in front of the Frauenkirche hosts a lively market on regular days, and during special holidays such as Christmas, a grand Christmas market is held. This year, the square will again feature a vibrant Christmas market, with a variety of stalls offering traditional Christmas handicrafts and decorations, as well as numerous food stalls selling gingerbread, sweets, grilled items, and more. The entire square will be filled with enticing aromas and a festive atmosphere. The Christmas market is open daily from 9:30 AM to 8:00 PM, with extended hours until 10:00 PM on Fridays and Saturdays. For more details, please visit: www.christkindlesmarkt.de/en.
