To welcome the Year of the Snake in 2013, traditional art is given a fresh twist with creative couplets that bring new life and meaning, allowing visitors to feel the joyful and innovative atmosphere of Orchid Island during the festive season. The Penghu National Scenic Area Administration, the Penghu County Government Tourism Department, and the Penghu County Calligraphy Association jointly held the “Golden Snake Brings Joy, Ink Dances to Welcome Auspiciousness – Orchid Island Greets Guests with Creative Spring Festival Couplets” event on January 19 and February 2. In addition to distributing couplets handwritten by master calligraphers, the event also involved renovating and decorating military dependents' villages with creative couplets.

The event consists of two main themes: “Welcoming Spring by Writing and Giving Out Couplets” and “Decorating Homes with Creative Couplets.” The “Welcoming Spring by Writing and Giving Out Couplets” activity took place on January 19 (Saturday) from 9:00 to 12:00 at Penghu New World (Penghu Tourism Industry Promotion Center). On the day of the event, master calligraphers from Taiwan, including Huang Changming and Yu Tongsheng, along with several renowned calligraphers from the local calligraphy association, joined forces to write and give out free couplets to the public, with each person limited to one copy while supplies last. The organizers also prepared 400 desktop New Year greeting cards to distribute to locals, who could also ask calligraphers to write auspicious messages on them. No prior registration was required for this event—sign-up was available on-site.
The “Decorating Homes with Creative Couplets” activity was scheduled for February 2 (Saturday) from 9:00 to 12:00 at Duxing New Village. Organizers mobilized volunteers and members to help renovate and decorate the military village, as well as put up creative couplets. Special attention was given to Pan Anbang’s home and the Zhang Yusheng Story House, which welcomed guests with creatively themed couplets, adding joy and a fresh look to one of Penghu’s must-visit spots for tourists.
