From now until February 28, the Hsinchu City Cultural Affairs Bureau is hosting the “Wang Chilang Creative Art Exhibition – ‘Hsinshan Mother Cultural Creativity & Chaoshan Tourism’” at the Hsinchu Railway Art Village. The exhibition centers around three main themes: Wang Chilang’s artistic works, Hsinshan Mother cultural and creative products, and Chaoshan tourism, vividly narrating the fascinating stories of the Chaoshan community. A total of 80 outstanding works will be displayed. During the exhibition period, activities such as a creativity competition, Chaoshan cuisine tasting, and a one-day Chaoshan experience tour will be held. Additionally, on February 28, a lottery draw will select 20 people to join the one-day tour for free. On February 16 at 10:00 AM, a free DIY creative activity for elementary school students to make Hsinshan Mother hydroponic pets will also take place, with a limit of 30 participants. In recent years, Wang Chilang has focused on the image of Hsinshan Mother as the core of his cultural creativity efforts. He is currently promoting two novel and practical cultural products: “Hydroponic Pets” and “A-Ma’s Bento.” Moreover, in order to deeply explore the ecology and local culture of Hsinshan, Wang Chilang has used his camera to capture the ever-changing sea and sky, documenting the rich and diverse scenery of Chaoshan, blending the unique local characteristics and culture of the community.
The Chaoshan community boasts abundant cultural resources and natural landscapes. Its deep cultural foundation nurtured the artist Wang Chilang, a native of Hsinchu, who studied comics and creative marketing under the renowned domestic cartoonist Liu Qinxing. He brought the image of the hardworking Hakka auntie to life in 3D sculptures, which became wildly popular. One of his works is the sculpture art piece in Jianshi Township titled “Guardian Deity of Jianshi Township – The Series Story of the Atayal Warriors and Jingping Bridge.” In addition, after being exposed to indigenous culture, Wang Chilang deeply felt that both indigenous and Hakka cultures needed further cultivation and development. He returned to his hometown, the Chaoshan community, to develop local cultural arts. Drawing inspiration from the story of his mother’s hard work and perseverance, he depicted the resilient spirit of Hakka women. His creation “Mother Carrying Firewood” was selected in 2011 as the theme for Hsinchu City’s Exemplary Mothers Awards, making Hsinshan Mother the representative figure of exemplary mothers.
