This year’s Chinese New Year holiday lasts nine days, and many people have already planned both domestic and international trips, kicking off the first major travel season of the year. Global online hotel service provider Hotels.com, based on the search habits of Taiwanese travelers, has released the most popular tourist destinations among Taiwanese people for the Spring Festival travel period (February 9 to 17). Compared to last year’s Spring Festival, the willingness of Taiwanese to travel abroad has significantly increased this year, with Tokyo once again topping the list of overseas travel destinations. Among domestic travel hotspots, Taipei City ranks first, followed by Kaohsiung.

This year’s Lunar New Year holiday offers more days off, and people are highly enthusiastic about traveling, with early trip planning becoming a top priority for travelers. Due to the continued depreciation of the Japanese yen, traveling to Japan during the Spring Festival is relatively more cost-effective. Hotels.com’s survey results show that three out of the top five most popular overseas vacation destinations for Taiwanese are in Japan: Tokyo and Osaka in the top two spots, and Kyoto in fourth place. Notably, compared to last year, searches for Osaka and Kyoto have surged by 230% and 221%, respectively, while Tokyo, which remains the most-searched overseas destination, also saw a 136% increase in search volume, indicating that the enthusiasm for travel to Japan continues to grow year after year.
Besides enjoying Japan’s romantic snowy scenery, tropical destinations are also highly popular. The third most popular overseas vacation spot is Bangkok, which not only offers affordable prices but is also supported by budget airlines, allowing travelers to enjoy warm sunshine and go on shopping sprees at great value. Since the launch of the direct flight route from Taipei to Seoul in April 2012, Seoul has maintained high popularity and ranks fifth among the most popular travel destinations.
