It's time to admire the spring flowers on the East Coast of Pingtung

Recently, flower news has been coming in from south to north across Pingtung County. There are seas of cosmos flowers in Manzhou Township, Xinpi Township, and Wanluan Township, while cherry blossoms are gradually blooming in the mountainous areas of Wutai and Majia. Among them, near the Lide Bridge in Manzhou Township, farmlands in Manzhou Village and Lide Village—located between the two villages—are utilizing the rest period after harvesting fodder to plant cosmos, marigold, and sunflowers. The area covers nearly 30 hectares, making it one of the earliest spring flower seas and a must-visit spot for travelers visiting Kenting in winter. Zhuang Zhichang, head of the Agricultural Tourism Section at Manzhou Township Office, said that this year’s flowering season started about 10 days earlier than usual. Recently, heavy rain damaged the flowers, affecting the floral landscape. Visitors are advised to enjoy the flowers soon. The township office plans to re-sow seeds after the Lunar New Year, and another beautiful flower sea will bloom during the Flying Fish Festival in May.

Xinpi Township’s comprehensive leisure park in Jihu Village has been developing flower seas in recent years, expanding from 0.4 hectares in the first year to 1.2 hectares in its third year. Zhou Jingshan, head of the Agriculture Section at Xinpi Township Office, mentioned that to create a “flower sea” effect, 0.8 hectares of the cosmos field were specially designed in wavy shapes, showcasing layers of floral waves in white, red, yellow, and pink—an absolutely stunning view. Recently, many people have flocked to see the flowers. Zhou estimates that the cosmos flowering period lasts about a month and could be extended if temperatures drop. Additionally, another 0.4-hectare sunflower field is about to bloom, so the flower-viewing season is expected to continue through the Lunar New Year.

In Wanluan Township, heading toward Jiazo Village along Baozhong Road, you can see a large expanse of cosmos flowers near the Jiazo Fire Station. This flower sea covers nearly 2 hectares and was jointly planted and maintained by the township office and teachers and students from Jiazo Elementary School. The flowers are now gradually blooming and are expected to last through the Lunar New Year. In Wutai Township, cherry blossoms usually bloom around the Lunar New Year, but some blossoms were seen as early as November last year. Since the cherry trees in Wutai are planted along Provincial Highway 24, blossoms are now emerging one after another along the road—some still in bud—and have already attracted many visitors to the mountains. The Wutai Tribe plans to hold market events and tour packages during the Lunar New Year, but some sections of Highway 24 are still under repair after Typhoon Morakot, so visitors should check traffic conditions before heading up. The mountainous areas of Majia Township are planted with cherry and peach blossoms, which gradually enter their blooming seasons around this time each year. First come the cherry blossoms, followed by peach blossoms in early February. While enjoying the flowers over a thousand meters above sea level, you can also sip locally grown coffee and sometimes witness sea of clouds rising from the valley, as if in a paradise. Lin Jinhui, head of the Agricultural Tourism Section at Majia Township Office, said the township office is collaborating with the Wada Tribe Association of Majia Village to host a “Peach Blossom Paradise Cycling, Hiking & Flower Appreciation Event” on February 14.
