Every year, numerous international tourists visit Taiwan, but which group loves Taipei the most? And what are the city’s most popular attractions among them? According to a survey released by the Taipei City Government’s Department of Information and Tourism, in 2012, the top three groups of international visitors to Taipei were from Mainland China, Japan, and Hong Kong & Macau. The top three most popular attractions among foreign tourists were night markets, Taipei 101, and the National Palace Museum.

The survey results indicated that in 2012, the top five most visited attractions in Taipei were night markets, Taipei 101, the National Palace Museum, the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, and the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. However, the attractions that left the highest favorable impressions on international tourists varied significantly by region. Mainland Chinese and Japanese tourists had the highest favorability towards the National Palace Museum; Muzha Zoo, Miramar Entertainment Park, and Beitou appeared on the list of favorites for Hong Kong & Macau tourists; while Singaporean and Malaysian tourists showed significantly higher favorability towards the Wufenpu clothing market compared to other regions. In addition to Taipei 101, European and American tourists also had higher favorability towards Maokong and Maopingshan compared to tourists from other areas.
In terms of the most memorable aspects, according to the survey results, international tourists’ impressions of Taipei generally revolved around three things: visiting night markets, experiencing the city’s strong human touch, and enjoying delicious food. Among them, Mainland Chinese tourists were most impressed by the strong sense of community in Taipei; Japanese tourists loved the city’s delicious cuisine the most; while for Hong Kong & Macau tourists, Taipei’s night markets were the most representative image.
