Sarawak, Malaysia’s largest state, boasts a rich and diverse ecosystem. In this green paradise grow the world’s largest flowers—the Rafflesia, as well as hornbills, orangutans, and ancient towering trees. In the early summer of 2013, this place will become the world’s most talked-about tropical music destination. The “Borneo Jazz Festival” (May 10–11) and the “Rainforest World Music Festival” (June 28–30) are expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors from around the globe, immersing them in the magical melodies performed in the heart of the rainforest.

Jazz originated in Africa, reached its pinnacle in the United States, and has since gained global popularity. Its dynamic rhythms, penetrating the eardrums, reflect the deepest stirrings of the human heart. Malaysia hosts various large-scale jazz festivals every year, where the wonderful notes of jazz weave through international cities, azure coastlines, and tropical rainforests, creating unique jazz melodies in everyone’s heart. Among them, the most exotic is the Borneo Jazz Festival, to be held in Miri, Sarawak, on May 10–11, which opens a stage for adventurous jazz enthusiasts. This year, renowned jazz bands from Germany, the United States, Sweden, Canada, Australia, and other countries will transform the magic of jazz into soul-stirring beats. The organizers have specially invited the legendary Swedish rock-jazz band “Jump4Joy”; the Canadian a cappella jazz group “The Nylons”; and Grammy Award-winning artist “Scott Martin,” among others. Their goal is to get global music lovers swaying to the rhythm of jazz amidst Sarawak’s tropical charm.

Entering its 16th year and having been ranked the world’s best international music event for four consecutive years by the renowned international music magazine Songlines, the “Rainforest World Music Festival” will stage its grand performance on June 28–30. Each year, it attracts over tens of thousands of global music fans and more than 10 well-known bands to deliver breathtaking and high-energy musical performances in the rainforest. This year’s Rainforest World Music Festival continues to shine with star power, featuring Turkish legendary singer Alp Bora, who performed at Taipei’s National Concert Hall in March this year and won the top prize at the Vienna World Music Awards in 2004; the Pine Leaf Boys, who have received four Grammy nominations and perform with a distinctive Native American style; and the Kila band, which has been active for 25 years and has performed in 30 countries worldwide. They will use their raw and wild music to break free from the constraints of urban life, inviting music lovers to experience a transcendent state in the rainforest.
