Dolphins at X, Turtle Island, and a Mirror Lake – this mystical wonderland is a must-visit in a lifetime

Compared to other Taiwanese outlying islands such as Penghu, Green Island, and Orchid Island, Turtle Island has always seemed somewhat distant from travelers. It’s not about the distance, but rather the fact that visiting the island requires an application, which some find troublesome. However, Turtle Island offers so much to see, photograph, and explore, with its abundant natural resources and pristine environment making it a mystical wonderland that every Taiwanese should visit at least once in their life.

Standing tall in the Pacific Ocean, Turtle Island is a natural landmark of Yilan. It earned its name due to its resemblance to a floating turtle, covers an area of 60 hectares, stretches 3.3 kilometers from east to west and 1.7 kilometers in width. The terrain is divided into three parts: the turtle’s head, shell, and tail. The island features sulfur vents, and several hot springs emerge near the turtle’s shell area, creating a truly unique geographical landscape.

The waters around Turtle Island are rich in whale and dolphin watching opportunities, with up to 17 species spotted in the area, including Spinner Dolphins, Bottlenose Dolphins, Striped Dolphins, and False Killer Whales. The best season for whale and dolphin watching runs from April to the end of September.

After landing on the island, visitors can stroll along the lakeside trail to enjoy the rich natural ecology of Turtle Island, including Formosan lily, Hypericum formosanum, Diospyros philippensis, wild fan palms, and various species of birds and butterflies. The loop takes about 40 minutes, after which you can visit nearby military tunnels and the Human-Ecology-Geology Exhibition Hall. At the end of the Diospyros philippensis Trail, there is an observation platform offering a panoramic view of Turtle Tail.

The highest elevation on Turtle Island is 398 meters, and with the 3-meter-high lookout post at the summit, it is referred to as 401 Highland. The trail offers rich ecological scenery, and the summit provides stunning views. The round trip takes about two hours. As a separate application is required, it is less frequented by general tourists but attracts academic groups for photography and research.
