Ever heard of "garage startups"? A few young people set up a few old computers and machines in their hometown warehouse, start making phone call after phone call, knocking on one door after another. A tiny garage, but big dreams. The most famous of these should be the founding story of Hewlett-Packard in the United States. Lunch Beat is similar, but instead of selling computers, it combines two seemingly unrelated things: disco and lunch. That is, you dance, and we treat you to lunch. If you can enjoy a concert and get breakfast at the same time, why not dance during lunch break?

Lunch Beat was first founded by Molly Ränge in a garage in Stockholm, the capital of Norway. After three years of development, it has expanded to more than 55 cities across five continents. The biggest highlight of the event is that it’s truly “active”: First, there’s no fixed venue for the dance party. Lunch Beat is actually a community where local organizers scout locations, while the headquarters and branches provide support including DJs. As a result, venues can range from regular dance halls to garages, schools, or even mall corridors. Furthermore, Lunch Beat always takes place during the lunch hour, so the rules are simple: dance to your heart’s content, groove with fellow office workers, tourists, and strangers, moving to the rhythm without a care in the world. Of course, there’s no need to diet for two weeks just to fit into your leotard—plus, they serve you lunch, so forget the leotard altogether.
After an hour of sweaty dancing, office workers have to return to their suit-and-tie worlds. But if you’re a traveler, it’s a rare chance to see Wall Street types or judges ditching decorum and shaking it up. Just imagining the scene tells you how much of a contrast it is. But beware: the event kindly discourages work talk during the lunch break, so don’t spoil the fun for everyone.
