Visiting Thailand—beyond popular destinations like Bangkok, Ayutthaya, and Chiang Mai, would you like to immerse yourself in the country’s natural beauty and charm? Namtok Thi Lo Su, located in Tak Province in northern Thailand, is one of Thailand’s most renowned waterfalls. It lies within the magnificent Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary, and is not only the largest waterfall in Thailand but also recognized as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. Unlike the thunderous descent of the Congo’s Inga Falls or the powerful roar of Nicaragua’s cascades, Namtok Thi Lo Su is celebrated for its serene and picturesque scenery. Its multi-tiered waterfall originates from the Huai Klo Tho stream at an elevation of over 400 meters above sea level, flowing into the Thung Yai Naresuan and Huay Kha Khaeng nature reserves, which together form Thailand’s largest wildlife sanctuary and one of Southeast Asia’s most spectacular and pristine evergreen rainforests.

The water of Thi Lo Su Waterfall cascades down from three heights, showering the edges of lush greenery and limestone cliffs in rows, before finally dropping nearly 300 meters. The width of the falls spans almost four football fields. At the top, the water plunges like a torrential rainstorm, creating white foam and a fresh, natural atmosphere. By the middle and lower sections, the water forms crystal-clear pools that are irresistible for a refreshing dip. Enjoy the cool, pure waters and the soothing sounds of the cascading streams to unwind, or take a dive for fun, all while being surrounded by a natural serenity and one of the most beautiful natural swimming pools you've ever experienced.
After enjoying the pool, you can also explore caves hidden behind the waterfall and go hiking in the area. This is the perfect place for adventure—a natural paradise nestled within evergreen forests filled with ironwood, teak, and bamboo, as well as beautiful orchids, wildflowers, ferns, a diverse range of butterflies and birds, and even the rare and vibrant hornbill.
The rainy season from June to November sees the highest water flow, making it the most stunning time to view the waterfall. However, due to safety concerns, access roads may be closed during this period, requiring a hike to reach the falls. The peak visiting season is therefore between December and January when water levels remain high and the main access road is open to the public. That said, the roads are steep and slippery, so only four-wheel-drive vehicles are permitted. Another way to reach the waterfall area is by rafting down the calm Klong River, followed by a hike or vehicle ride to the site.
