Missed last month’s Taipei Dadaocheng Music Fireworks Festival or Japan’s summer hanabi spectacular? No worries—the “25th Macao International Fireworks Display Contest” kicks off on September 14. This year, ten teams from five continents are participating, including companies from Spain, South Africa, Switzerland, South Korea, Portugal, Australia, Italy, Canada, France, and China. South Africa is competing for the first time, while French and Italian teams have each won the championship twice before. In addition to synchronized music, each team will also present elaborately designed laser light effects this year, creating a dazzling audiovisual feast of “fire trees and silver flowers” over the waters in front of Macao Tower.

This year’s contest will be held over five days: September 14, 19, 21, 28, and October 1. Each night at 9:00 PM and 9:40 PM, one team will put on a fireworks show. On opening night, Spain and South Africa will take the stage first. The debutant African Fireworks Company from South Africa has won awards at multiple international fireworks competitions and was responsible for the opening and closing fireworks displays during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Canada’s Groupe Fiatlux-Ampleman Fireworks Company, also competing this year, brings over a century of experience in creating spectacular fireworks displays and frequently performs at both domestic and international fireworks competitions and festive events. The Dongxin Fireworks Group Co., Ltd., originating from Liuyang in China’s “hometown of fireworks,” has produced fireworks shows for the 60th National Day celebrations at Beijing’s Tiananmen Square in 2009, the opening ceremony of the 2010 Shanghai Expo, and the 2010 Asian Games.
Additionally, Switzerland’s SUGYP SA Fireworks Company has participated in numerous international fireworks competitions and musical fireworks shows. France’s BREZAC Fireworks Company has competed four times, consistently ranking high and winning twice. Italy’s PANZERA-INDUSTRIA has also claimed the championship twice. Spanish and Portuguese fireworks companies have also won in Macao, while Australia’s Infinity Fireworks Company took third place in the previous edition. On October 1, the National Day finale will feature fireworks teams from France and China.
