Aged in barrels—up to 20 years old | New Taipei’s first craft beer brewery opens

Cool beer is an essential part of summer fun. Carefully prepared by Taiwan Tiger Craft Brewery, New Taipei City’s first craft beer brewery opened on May 28 at the Yonghe Taipei Park in Xizhi. Freshly brewed beer was available on opening day, with hourly brewery tour services provided, along with a variety of specialty foods and lively DJ performances. To ensure the quality of the freshly brewed beer, business hours will be limited to Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the future.

Xu Ruowei, Taiwan Tiger’s chief brewmaster with nearly 10 years of brewing experience, said that most breweries don’t have many areas open to visitors. “We highlight the fact that ‘the beer you drink is brewed right next door’—letting guests step into our ‘kitchen.’ This is definitely a first in Taiwan,” she said. She also revealed that they plan to hold a Beer Month in the future, collaborating with different restaurants at various locations, aiming to let Taiwanese people enjoy their craft beer.

In addition to offering freshly brewed beer, Xu pointed out that another unique feature of the brewery is “barrel aging.” The beer is aged in oak barrels imported from Kentucky, USA, which are previously filled with bourbon whiskey, allowing the beer to absorb the barrel flavors. Typically, the beer is aged for 3 to 5 years, but can be kept for up to 20 years, during which humidity must be carefully controlled.

Xu added that the craft beer recipes follow traditional brewing processes, emphasizing artisanal methods. To maintain beer quality, only premium ingredients from the United States are selected, along with brewing equipment imported from Germany. They even have a professional lab to ensure the high standards of Taiwan Tiger Craft Beer.

To make it easier for the public to visit the brewery, Wu Zulun, head of the Taiwan Tiger Craft Brewing team, noted that on May 28, Taiwan Tiger set up a shuttle bus service every half hour from Nangang Exhibition Center MRT Station to provide convenient transportation to and from the brewery, so everyone can enjoy the early summer craft beer feast together.

The New Taipei City Department of Economic Development pointed out that with support from various programs—including factory site selection, one-stop registration services, business funding assistance, and operational support—it has been very rewarding to see Taiwan Tiger Craft Brewery grow step by step. Since obtaining its liquor license in April, the brewery has been capable of producing at least 12 metric tons of beer each month.
