Along Gongyi Road, one of Taichung’s top gourmet zones, Forty Café is tucked away in a tranquil alley beside the main road. Ms. Yao, who previously worked in import business, started Forty Café as she reached the age of forty — a time often dubbed as “life’s mid-point.” The café’s name “Forty” refers to the age at which she pivoted careers, marking the beautiful sentiment of “a woman at forty blooms like a flower.” A breakfast enthusiast, Ms. Yao insists that breakfast should be hearty. She also noticed that most breakfast shops in Taiwan either serve overly fast-food style meals or overly refined and pricey ones. Thus, Forty Café offers customers nutritious brunch options and a cozy, laid-back dining atmosphere.

Forty Café occupies only a small section of a long storefront on the first floor of a residential building, without any flashy signage, so first-time visitors need to keep an eye out to avoid missing it. The high-ceilinged space features floor-to-ceiling windows adorned with spaced-out golden lace-patterned window decals, adding layers of greenery visible from inside — some clear and bright, others faintly visible — making the window views more interesting. The bar facing the windows is fitted with rattan-backed high stools, echoing the natural and rustic feel outside. The first-floor space uses purple as the base color, paired with light and airy white and soft earth tones. The mezzanine boldly features purple walls, with white painted floral patterns on the floor and black tassels nearby, exuding a strong lounge-bar-like, lazy ambiance.

Ms. Yao shared that purple is a composite color, radiating the beauty of red and blue blending together — much like how she experienced many life stages when transitioning careers at 40. The café’s brunch menu includes freshly squeezed juices, high-fiber salads, seafood or meat-based mains, and bread from Taichung’s renowned Dangben Bakery. Meals are paired with a hand-brewed coffee or floral fruit tea, transforming a satisfying brunch into the start of a wonderful day.
The restaurant’s space is thoughtfully integrated with the surrounding Green Corridor environment, bringing a relaxed vibe inside so that customers can enjoy their breakfast with ease, helping nutrients to be better absorbed by the body.
